President Mike's Minute

Good Wishes

Good wishes from the Club to President Mike, and Terry Mikkelsen [recovering from a fall], both now out of hospital, and their continuing convalescences at home.
Club News and Notices
Rotary Youth Leadership Awardees

With President Mike recovering after his accident, last Tuesday evening President -Elect John Hawke welcomed members, and RYLArians to Alexandra Park. A sit-down meal with plenty of finger food provided.

Peter Ross expressed the Club’s thanks to some key members involved in the organisation of this year’s RYLA course: Alastair Macfarlane for organising the Club interviews, Brian McMath for the business network and speakers and Boyne Drummond for arranging the significant insurance cover.

He welcomed RYLA alumni Henry Kircher [who had attended the RYLA elevate course in Australia], Courtney Young and Josh Simpson. Josh was involved in the forthcoming RYPEN Disability Camp at Glen Taylor School.

Josh issued an invitation to Club members to come along to the Camp on Wednesday 6th September in support of the young athletes involved. The participants will be invited from the physically disabled community at the upcoming “Disability Connect Transition Expo” on 6 September 2023 at Auckland Netball Centre, St Johns where Rotary District Youth Team will be present throughout the day as part of the local community [and see below].

Alastair outlined the interviews that had been held for the 21 RYLA attendees endorsed by the Club, commenting on their outstanding talent and enthusiasm. The other interviewing panel members and drivers for the week were acknowledged. The Newmarket BNZ venue for many of the interviews had been ideal.

The RYLArians then gave us an impressive display of their abilities, commenting on their experiences, and the difference the Course had made to them. Caius & Claire convened panels to answer questions on the course itself, and the speakers. The first panel consisted of Angela, Carl and Suprana and the second Evelyn, Nina and Yazmin. All of the RYLArians had benefited from being exposed to the various different styles of leadership and motivational challenges.

The evening concluded with a delightful professionally edited video of the week providing engaging glimpses of our young leaders-to-be.

A warm vote of thanks to Peter, Alastair and the team for an excellent evening and a great 2023 course.

10AM TO 4.30PM

GLEN TAYLOR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

172 WEST TAMAKI ROAD

GLEN INNES, AUCKLAND 1072

What is it?

Every person should have the opportunity to be able to challenge themselves in a safe environment. Disability should not be a barrier to new experiences and interactions with other young adults. Through sport, fun activities and speakers, this Day Camp is an opportunity to improve self-confidence and enhance self-development and the opportunity to meet and make new connections. For participants and young leaders, it will also provide the valuable opportunity to connect with peers you may otherwise have not met.
