Visit to the Medical School

Professor Cris Print welcomed us on our visit, arranged by Brian McMath, to the University of Auckland Medical School. Cris is a senior member of the Department of Molecular Medicine & Pathology in the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences. He recently received a prestigious Kea Award – commenting in his acceptance reply on the importance of working in teams.

Cris acknowledged the ongoing support by the Club and the Charitable Foundation for the general oncology [Ross Craig], heart [John Burton], and MAPAS [Harold Titter] awards.

Brian reported that for the oncology and MAPAS awards, $730k had been contributed over the previous 20 years. The Newmarket Rotary Charitable Foundation had been a member of the Sir Douglas Robb society for the last 10 years.

Brian thanked Cris and Catherine Davis, Development Manager, for their hospitality and the convivial arrangements for the evening.

We were then privileged to hear from some of the awardees.

Harold Titter Award

Jesse Davis was the top achiever in the Certificate in Health Sciences programme last year. The Hikitia Te Ora, Maori & Pacifica health practitioners programme prepares students for the Bachelor of Health Sciences and the School of Medicine. Jesse spoke of being brought up in the Bay of Islands, his earlier career as a pharmacist, and his plans for the future.

Rotary Newmarket John Burton Heart Research Award

Last year’s recipient, Dr Ana Luiza Sayegh from Brazil, reminded us of the significant role of hypertension in cardiovascular disease, and introduced us to her work in microneurography. She had used her award to spend time in Canada and had been able to bring back new software techniques and ideas to share with the heart team here.

Ross Craig Oncology Awards

Libby Rea-Brownlee, a registered nurse of 25 years standing, is the first cancer nurse to receive this award in 2022. She is participating in translational oncology research, working towards the development of a national framework for nurse-led, clinical delivery of genomic testing for all NZ cancer patients.

Dr Jaimin Choi, one of this year’s recipients, is an anatomical pathology registrar. He is involved in the next generation sequencing of anatomical tumours, with the identification of treatment solutions, in particular for rare cancers. He is currently working with clinicians and researchers to extend his familiarity with genomic techniques.

Dr Howie Mao is a surgeon at North Shore Hospital, with a particular interest in pancreatic cancer. He is one of a team of four surgeons and spoke movingly of some of his recent experiences. He is working with the University’s precision oncology teams, including research into genomics and tissue morphology.
