We break a lot of crockery at my workplace. And we do it intentionally.
Yes - we actively encourage team members to smash cups & plates.
Newbies always struggle with this.
“No – it’s a perfectly good mug!”. “It will make a noise!” “It will make a mess!” “This doesn’t feel right”.
We ask people to intentionally break crockery because it is counter habitual. It’s also fun.
We want our team to lean into scary, awkward, flinch inducing moments.
This concept is well described in the short online pamphlet called
The Flinch - a highly recommended 10 min read.
Too many of us avoid doing new things because we have a fear of the “flinch” moment.
You know; that moment you abandon the safe, the habitual, the tried and proven.
This week I saw two instances of Rotary members conquering flinch moments. Both deserve recognition.
One, was a member who has embraced the preferred Direct Debit payment option. (You know who you are, and you really made my day.)
The other was how our members have considered Zone 8 Regionalization with an open-minded “Yeah – let’s have a look at that, it might be interesting”.
Moments that might make us flinch are everywhere: talking with strangers, learning a new language, courageous conversations with loved ones.
Let’s all find something that might be awkward or scary… and do it anyway!
Go on, break some crockery!
