President's Notes
From Co-President John,

Well, if you were in any doubt about the value of what Rotary and your club does in the community then if you attended the meeting on Tuesday night you will be in no doubt now.

In my introduction I mentioned the large number of youth projects undertaken by RCON and that arguably RYLA is the jewel in the crown. On Tuesday night we were treated to an inspirational, motivational presentation by this year’s RYLA graduates.

The whole event was set up and run by RYLA graduates with Penelope and Kelly doing a magnificent job of organising and then running the meeting on the night.

At my table sat a man with a big proud smile on his face and whilst he would likely prefer to fly under the radar, Peter Ross must be congratulated and thanked for all the work he has put in to ensure the success of this years RYLA.

Yes it’s a big team effort (with many RCON members contributing) but Peter in his role as District Youth Director has I know put in an incredible amount of effort and is re shaping the future of RCON Youth (and hopefully Leadership) with his initiatives to involve RYLA graduates in a range of RCON projects.

Thank you Peter.

Talking of RCON project;

STADIUM PARKING PROJECT

Go Media Stadium is home to the Warriors and Auckland FC.

Since 1995 Penrose Club with the support of RC of Maunkau Sunrise and the OTHC Trade Students has run parking there as a significant fundraiser ($20,000 pa).

IF the Warriors manage to make it back into the top 4 again …. There will be a few more games to be played (hopefully) at Go Media this season.

The Auckland FC season will require additional volunteers to assist with the project and maintain this valuable income stream.

There are two parking sites – 23 Maurice Rd (Bishop’s Electrical) and 5 Maurice Rd (Next to the railway line)
#23 requires 1 x Rotarian plus 2 students or RYLARians
#5   requires 1 x Rotarian, 2 x Maunkau Sunrise and 2 students or RYLARians.

It is important that all RCON members get involved and support this project.
I suggest that each Committee chair provide at least one “volunteer” to commit to assisting at upcoming events.

RYLA 2025

Last Tuesday members and guests were treated to fantastic presentations from RYLA attendees at our meeting at Remuera Golf course.

The evening was lead by members of our clubs youth committee Kelly Botha and Penelope Goertzen, themselves RYLA alumni.

The evening started with the song Bong Crosby’s “My Way” sung by Cameron Oxnebridge.

After our meal, we heard from attendees talking about their particular experiences through the week and in particular the unknown, not knowing anyone, being thrust into groups of strangers who became friends.  Being plucked from comfort zones to discomfort.  Learning how to function without sleep. Learning first hand about leadership and what that means in real time. Resilience was a wod that featured.

Highlights other than the island were the Social Enterprise Day and the Community day both of which demonstrated the impact of small actions. Lessons were learned about empathy inclusion, adaptability and the positive effect of good leadership.

The above is only a snapshot of what we heard. The underlying theme was one of testing oneself, resilience adaptability and making the best of one's circumstances.

It never ceases to amaze how we as a club are continually able to identify and send to RYLA the great candidates we do.

A great evening was had by all.

Rotary Club oif Auckland Wolrd Press Photo Exhibition.

The Rotary Club of Auckland would love to let your members know about our major fundraiser for the year – the World Press Photo exhibition, which is on now in the Auckland CBD.

We’ve been bringing the exhibition to Auckland since 2010, and want to make it the biggest success yet. We’d love the support of our Rotary family, and we’re hoping you might consider forwarding the details to your club members. We’d love to see them there!

What’s the World Press Photo Exhibition?

The annual World Press Photo contest has recognised professional press and documentary photographers since it began in 1955. The winning entries from each category across six regions form this incredible exhibition. This year it includes a series of photos shot in New Zealand by NZ-based photographer Tatsiana Chypsanava, as well as a retrospective celebrating 70 years of World Press Photo.
