President's Notes
From Co-President Warwick

With ANZAC day on Saturday, our ANZAC themed meeting on Tuesday at OTHC was a great success, with tables decorated by Penny with red candles, rosemary sprigs and poppies, three Interactors from the College plus their teacher Alysha, an outstanding speech by Clare Turner on the value to your career in volunteering, and then Headmaster Nick inviting us into the hall, where he was meeting with all his staff, for the ANZAC commemoration.

Owen Barwood, festooned with his service medals, recited the Ode of Remembrance, Alastair Macfarlane then played the Last Post on his trumpet, two minutes of silence to remember those who gave their lives in the World Wars, and finally Alastair playing the Reveille. It was a very memorable and moving experience for all the staff and Rotarians and visitors.

Many thanks to all those who contributed to the service, including John Scott, Ann Dunphy, Penny Leyland, Paul Monk, Owen Barwood and Alastair Macfarlane, and to Bruce Watson for arranging the speaker. It was also great to see Alastair's son James giving his Dad moral support with his friend Shay.

We also collected over $50 in poppy donations, and the club will be supplementing this to make a good donation to RSA and the work they do for veterans,

Clare Turner was outstanding with very clear messages, particularly for those seeking jobs: it's almost impossible for graduates to find jobs; c.500 applications are received for every job advertised; volunteering gives you a real head start, and there are so many opportunities for volunteers to make a difference in the lives of kiwis; and surprisingly, with high unemployment, so many sports and community clubs cannot get enough volunteers.

Richard Solomon has reported that Rotary Remuera has arranged for Dan Reddiex, Headmaster of Dilworth to speak at their meeting on Monday 8th June, 5.30, and they are graciously inviting our Club to join them in view of our mutual interests in the school.

Richard has had a long relationship with Dilworth and  believes this is an important opportunity for our members to accept.   Reasons are......
1. Dan Reddiex is sure to deliver a very interesting and positive address, given his role in the rejuvenation of the school from off-the-floor to respected top standards.
2. Our longstanding relationship with the school up until it was assigned to the Remuera Club and ongoing since then on at least 3 projects.
3. Our relationship with the Remuera Club generally and specifically with regard to Dilworth.
4. You will note in his invitation the following significant words.- "for once we can host our parent club, even if it has taken some 46 years to happen!" .
The dinner meeting is on Monday 8th June at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 5.30 for 6.00pm.

Don't forget there is no meeting next Tuesday due to ANZAC weekend, and the next meeting is lunch on Tuesday 5th May with Dr Helen Murray, a distinguished Brain Injury and Neurodegeneration researcher as speaker.

Clare Turner

Founder, Consultant and Managing Director,

Executive recruiter Clare Turner shared how her early life from a long-established Wairarapa farming background, was immensely expanded by Carterton Rotary - when she was selected for a Youth Exchange, which brought the life-changing opportunity of being hosted by a Mexican club in El Paso, Texas.

When Clare joined the workforce in the late 1980s, she soon took the opportunity in London to move from banking, to working for St Johns – where she became conscious of the essential need in voluntary fields, to listen respectfully to everyone’s opinion and work collaboratively.

Today’s turbulent times bring an average of 623 applications per advertised vacancy – and Clare’s key message is that voluntary contributions are a game-changer, in getting your CV to stand out among so many other quality applicants! Volunteering from a young age develops superior leadership and people skills of teamwork, communication and collaboration. The power of what we are doing in the community has never been stronger.

Clare noted that both her parents were proud Rotarians – and the importance of sharing Rotary stories to encourage others to volunteer! Clare spoke directly to the three Interactors from One Tree Hill College who were part of the audience, encouraging them to spread the message to other students, on how volunteering allows you to differentiate yourself and be seen in the world! She also told us about encouraging a famous All Black to return to his old school and model reaching out to others through service - the legacy message of “Put your hand down, to pull people up!”

“No coaches for sports teams these days” is a frequent lament – that provides a brilliant opportunity for adults with time on their hands. Nothing is more powerful than interaction with others.!

Rotary Newmarket needs you to help out with carparking at Mount Smart stadium.

Each game, this activity raises up to $2,000 for the club, or around $60,000 a year. This forms a major part of the funds for the club's youth programmes including RAP and RYPEN. Recently, Go Media Stadium has started blocking the road around the stadium when large crowds are expected meaning we need more volunteers, and the number of volunteers is beginning to fall below a sustainable level.
Each game requires 8 volunteers, 3 at 23 Maurice Road and 5 at 5 Maurice Road. We don't expect you to show up every week, that would be silly. However, the more people who volunteer, the less of a commitment it is for each person and the more funds we can raise for the youth programs.
You would be expected to arrive 2.5hours before the game starts and help with taking money via cash and EFTPOS and guiding drivers. Usually both parking lots are filled within two hours and after that almost everyone can go home. One or two volunteers would need to stay at 5 Maurice Road until an hour after the game to lock the gate. We'll provide safety vests and EFTPOS machines. We recommend bringing a water bottle.
This crucial fundraiser can't continue to exist without your help, so please contact Shaun Peacock (email: shaun_peacock@windowslive.com Phone: 027 631 0065) to sign up.
