Another excellent meeting this last Tuesday twith an update on whats happening in Reading Enrichment. See the report below.
Mappas
I attended the Mappas Awards Evening on Friday which night was a happy, noisy celebration of their graduation for the 100 Maori and Pacific students. Rotary Newmarket representatives myself, Penny, David and Liz Jack and Andrew Titter representing the Titter family, felt honoured to be invited, and enjoyed special speeches from the faculty heads of Hikitia te Ora, Certificate of Health Sciences, and then the graduations, with all students being presented their certificates, often accompanied by their family haka and other polynesian celebratory singing and dancing, all to the constant beating of the drums.
The Harold Titter Award for the overall top student for the year was made to Summer Walmsley, and received by her parents with Summer being away for a year at a camp in Canada. Summer also received a number of other awards for top student in various classes, and obviously made a big impression to teachers and heads of departments on the course.
Summer was awarded a framed certificate for the Harold Titter Award plus $3,000. As the Commissioner of the Auckland Health Board in the 1990's, Harold played a key role in recognising the urgent need to increase the number of Maori and Pacific health professionals
The ceremony finished with all the graduates on stage singing and dancing to some well prepared songs and chants.
Rotary Newmarket was thanked many times for our contribution to the evening and we were made to feel very special.
As a footnote, the Dean of the Faculty, Warwick Bagg, told me that the MAPAS course is currently under threat as, according to our current Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour, it is a "race based" course which doesn't meet his "merit only" requirement.
Dilworth
Richard Solomon has reported that Rotary Remuera has arranged for Dan Reddiex, Headmaster of Dilworth to speak at their meeting on Monday 8th June, 5.30, and they are graciously inviting our Club to join them in view of our mutual interests in the school.
Richard has had a long relationship with Dilworth and believes this is an important opportunity for our members to accept. Reasons are......
1. Dan Reddiex is sure to deliver a very interesting and positive address, given his role in the rejuvenation of the school from off-the-floor to respected top standards.
2. Our longstanding relationship with the school up until it was assigned to the Remuera Club and ongoing since then on at least 3 projects.
3. Our relationship with the Remuera Club generally and specifically with regard to Dilworth.
4. You will note in his invitation the following significant words.- "for once we can host our parent club, even if it has taken some 46 years to happen!" .
The dinner meeting is on Monday 8th June at Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club, 5.30 for 6.00pm.

Club News and Notices
For most of the school year, for an hour on Monday mornings and 2 hours on Wednesdays, the Club organizes a group of volunteers to tutor year 9 students in reading at Aorere College in Papatoetoe. The sessions help build confidence of the students and improve their reading and comprehension skills. The programme is hugely rewarding for both students and tutors. REP has been running at Aorere since 2021 and so far we have helped around 200 students.
We are always looking for more tutors so we can help more students. Volunteers don’t need to be Rotary club members and don’t need any special skills. The school provides all the resources we need. There is a strong team ethos so there is back up to cover time off for tutors as needed. Please contact us if you might be interested in joining the tutor team. Rotary Newmarket needs you to help out with carparking at Mount Smart stadium.
Each game, this activity raises up to $2,000 for the club, or around $60,000 a year. This forms a major part of the funds for the club's youth programmes including RAP and RYPEN. Recently, Go Media Stadium has started blocking the road around the stadium when large crowds are expected meaning we need more volunteers, and the number of volunteers is beginning to fall below a sustainable level. Each game requires 8 volunteers, 3 at 23 Maurice Road and 5 at 5 Maurice Road. We don't expect you to show up every week, that would be silly. However, the more people who volunteer, the less of a commitment it is for each person and the more funds we can raise for the youth programs. You would be expected to arrive 2.5hours before the game starts and help with taking money via cash and EFTPOS and guiding drivers. Usually both parking lots are filled within two hours and after that almost everyone can go home. One or two volunteers would need to stay at 5 Maurice Road until an hour after the game to lock the gate. We'll provide safety vests and EFTPOS machines. We recommend bringing a water bottle.
