Paddling Forward
I was reading a report this week about the Hauraki Gulf and it included a metaphor that could just as easily be applied to our Rotary Club. With apologies to the original authors:
Turning the trajectory of Rotary Newmarket will be difficult. It’s like paddling a waka against the tide. Everyone needs to be pulling in the same direction. Ease off and we quickly drift back.
Strength and stamina are needed to simply maintain our position. More is needed to move towards our desired destination.
Gains can quickly be lost. If we drift back, we could hit rocks and lose everything. Extra paddlers help us move forward, but they must be motivated, powerful and fit.
Those extra paddlers are potential new members and the existing members that aren’t currently paddling.
This challenge is not unique or “unprecedented”. Other clubs, organisations and individuals have successfully undergone this challenge of re-imagination and re-growth.
This week at Rotary we celebrated Ross & Owen, two of our elders/koro, with honorary membership; two champion paddlers who deserve our respect.
This coming week please reflect on who will replace them? Who shares our values? Who might grab a paddle?

PARENTING PLACE
Jenny Hale, on the staff of the charity Parenting Place for the last 23 years, and author of the recent book Kind, Firm, Calm: Simple Strategies to Transform your Parenting, outlined how parents [and grand-parents] need an awareness of what is going on in the family and can achieve confidence in their roles, with every child deeply loved.
She stressed the importance of
Listening without judgement
Telling each other’s stories
Welcoming and engaging well with each child
Being an encouraging and inspiring role model
In citing several case studies she reaffirmed how we need to be kind, firm and not critical. Dealing with a “red” brain, off line, is no time to be confrontational.
Clients pay for the services provided, but should payment be a barrier, options are readily available.
In welcoming members to the meeting, President Dave highlighted the useful links provided through the phone tree in our new Members’ Handbook. He emphasised our monthly Tuesday meetings commitments: 1st, 3rd and 4thTuesday lunchtime meetings at Ellerslie, and the 2nd Tuesday evening meeting at the Remuera Golf Club.
Next week’s meeting, to be addressed by Mayoral candidate Wayne Brown, will be held in the Takanini Room on Level 2 of the Ascot Stand.
A Presidential suggestion, put democratically to the meeting, that the costs of a weekly ticket in the raffle be levied on all members, would be discussed by the Directors.
Club stalwarts Owen Cashmore [Rotary member since 1971] and Ross George [Newmarket member since 1966] were given standing ovations and honoured with framed certificates of service.
Rotary visitor Charles Miller, a Past President of the Club and now responsible for District PR, emphasized for those members on Linked In how they should also log on to the District Linked In page.
Paul Monk outlined substantial progress with the Garden Design Fest sponsorships for later in the year - further sponsors welcome.
Charities receiving support from the 2022 event will be:
Lifeline, KidsCan, Garden to Table and Oke.

PRODUCT ACCELERATOR WITH A BIT OF FLAIR? - BRIAN MCMATH
Editor Ron suggested I write something of an update on FLAIR equine nasal strips, but I advised him we have very few racing fans in the club, since Rex Jensen passed away. However, I will give you a quick update. For the past three years both the Harness Horse of the Year & Thoroughbred of the Year have raced wearing FLAIR strips. Last year’s winner was Probabeel, raced by Sistema founders Brendon & Jo Lindsay. I had the privilege of visiting their Cambridge Stud-Karaka farm recently to see Probabeel who has been retired. They had planned to send her to Royal Ascot but she was injured in Australia & retired to stud. She won $5Mi mainly in Australia and will be a valuable broodmare for the Lindsay’s at Cambridge Stud. The farm at Karaka is magnificent with all the best facilities imaginable for looking after horses. So, I thought members would be more interested in learning about some of the exciting stuff I am involved in with the Product Accelerator (PA)-www.nzproductaccelerator.co.nz.
Hard to sum up such a busy and inspiring weekend, but one of my key takeaways would be from Ola Ioane's presentation around why inclusion is important
1. Societal - it's the right thing to do
2. Productivity - it's the smart thing to do
3. Innovation and adaptation - it's the sensible thing to do
Ron Seeto was humbled and surprised to receive his PHF 3rd Ruby .
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION in our Rotary Family. You can also go ask Pres Dave, IPP Greg and AG David what they got out of it! IMAGINE what you can do via Rotary….
19/07/22 - Tuesday was a cold & wet night in Auckland CBD. That didn’t take any of the shine off a warm, funny and uplifting Auckland Rotaract Changeover. COVID delivered again with the current President (Shaun Peacock) falling ill on the morning of the Changeover event and therefore being unable to attend.
No worries - it certainly didn’t dent the enthusiasm as Chris Osborne introduced himself as the new President. Rotary 9920 DG Allan Smith handed over the chains of office. Then new President Chris made a short speech to encourage visitors to join Rotaract. Becky Giblin was also awarded a deserved PHF for all her hard work with GECAF. Rotary Newmarket member Ariana Andrews was seen mixing and mingling as the night progressed – no doubt scoping joint projects for this club. (Menu: Subway sandwiches & Roses Chocolates)
“My understanding is that it was done many years ago, before I was involved in the club, so back to the 1990’s
The significance of it was that when the Girl Guides were called to ask if we could rent it were extremely pleased when the found Newmarket was one of the clubs involved. It is also notable that when I the lone Rotarian from Newmarket turned up in the rain and the dark on Tuesday night it was locked and unavailable !!
Maybe one of the older members may remember it”
