Where the buck stops

The buck stops with me and I am sorry we had to cancel. There were a number of communication breakdowns. Ellerslie thought we were there for lunch and Remuera closed the Club and started the renovations early.

There is a silver lining. Some of the members went to Remuera without registering that they would be attending. All members who had booked on line received a text saying the meeting was canned. Please, Please, Please, help those who are trying to run the Club…..make the effort and register or decline

President Mike’s Minute

There will be an evening meeting on Tuesday 29^th August. The venue has yet to be selected.

The theme will be RYLA Graduates sharing their experiences. As the Club has already supported these young people, please show your support for them by attending that meeting at which we hope to have a sizeable number of former RYLARIANS in attendance.

President’s Appeal

There is a large number of members who are not attending meetings - neither lunch nor dinner. Can I appeal to you to please come back to a meeting.... 29^th August is wide advance notice....less excuse.....

I have been told that the best members are those who never use the Club but pay their dues....and ask yourself....why do I pay dues for something I never attend.....to those not coming to meetings.....would you pay $500 to a beggar on Queen St....of course not.....We are your friends.....

WE WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU ARE DOING IN LIFE....WE MISS YOU

Meetings

As you know, the evening meeting this week was cancelled at the last moment due to communication difficulties. Apologies to all for the inconveniences caused.

Our evening meeting next Tuesday 18^th July will be held at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, 8 – 10 Tamaki Drive, Okahu Bay. 5.45 for 6.00pm. The 2023 75^th Anniversary Award will be presented to Hayley Alena for her research on lizards on Great Barrier Island; Eve Whitehead – last year’s Awardee – will bring us up to date with her work on the health of the birds of the Gulf; and Professor Andrew Jeffs from the AU Institute of Marine Science will also give us a brief presentation.

Creating Hope in the World!

Last Tuesday 4^th July Members welcomed President Mike Alison to his first meeting for the new Rotary year, with the theme Create Hope in the World.

Mike conveyed his appreciation of his appointment by the Club and expressed the wish for us to enjoy a year of fun, fellowship and service together.

The Committees’ Chairs then spoke to some of their goals for the year [acronyms included for brevity – listed in full in your new Directory available shortly]:

Membership

Dave Birch had us exploring our reasons for joining Rotary. His goals for the Committee include the induction of eight new members.

Foundation & World Community Service

Along with the on-going pattern of international aid and development, including ERKs and Polio, Bill Strand is looking at the introduction of a mobile dental caravan into Samoa.

Youth

John Hawke’s list of projects for the year encompasses REP at Aorere College; selecting candidates for the National Science School, RYLA and RYPEN, the Spirit of Adventure and Outward Bound; MUNA and RYDA; supporting Boyne with the Walsh Flying School, and support for Epsom Lodge.

Environment & Community Service

Boyne Drummond and David Bradshaw spoke to some of the work which would be undertaken by the Committee including support for the Kindness Collective, Epsom Lodge Breakfasts, Trees for Survival and the Salvation Army. Boyne detailed the Anniversary Award and the Schools Beehive project.

David B was also involved in other Environmental projects as Chair of the District Environmental Committee.

Kindness Collective and Flood relief

Kindness Collective and Flood relief

D9920 is working with the Kindness Collective with regards to distributing flood relief funds. Here is their latest update. To date approx $75,000 has been passed to the Kindness Collective for distribution on the District’s behalf.

George Wilson – just acknowledged as D9920 Rotarian of the Year - is well known to many members of our Club – not least because of his great support for the Salvation Army foodpacking, along with RYDA and everything else Rotary with which he is involved.

George comments:

“Of all the achievements that I have had in 48 years as a Rotarian this is the best news that I have ever been associated with and is money being directed right into the Heart of the challenge at hand. I am so pleased that DG Allan and his team have made this commitment with Sarah Page and her wonderful helpers at the Kindness Collective.

What is happening here is recognition by ROTARY, that here is a creditable organisation with far better contacts and proximity to the need than we Rotarians can ever possibly achieve on our own. Please accept our thanks to all that were involved either in giving or in the decision to make this gift. You have made a most worthwhile decision and action and I am extremely proud of being a Rotarian.”
