POINT OF ORDER ?
Is it time for a WAKE UP call second month into our Rotary year?
Is it time we looked into the mirror and ask How do we want to belong to RCoN or RN?
Is it too much to ask for the courtesy of a reply?
Is it OK for Alastair MacFarlane having to send a second email ( after getting only 10 replies in 10- days) asking for feedback to 2 Fellowship initiatives ?
Is it disappointing not to have the 7 members I emailed this past week for their contribution to Rapport to confirm with at least a  simple Yes or No …I got one back…You know who you are and there is still time for you to redeem yourselves!
Wake up! Engage ! Play your part PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Be a busy RN bee .

Reflection on Service above Self

My father passed away recently.  I recalled at his funeral that his “super-power” was finding “middle-ground” with people.  That certainly didn’t mean everything was compromised or negotiated.  Quite the opposite; he could, at times, be very uncompromising.

Rather, his pursuit of middle-ground reflected Marcus Aurelius’ sentiment in Meditations: “What’s bad for the hive, is bad for the bee”.   Indeed, what good is an individual’s success or victory, if it is at the expense of their community?  Rotary mirrors this same thinking in our “Service above Self” statement.  To me, the spirit of "service above self" is to place the hive’s interests before our own self-interests.  What do you think?

RYLA & RYPEN EVENING CELEBRATION

Tuesday’s meeting at Remuera Golf Club was themed around RYPEN and RLYA.

Our guests, introduced by Peter Ross included participants of the recent RYLA week, Chris Osborne from RYPEN, Partners of members, Murry Thom one of the speakers at RYLA, James Gordon OC of the Army’s team at RYLA and past youth exchange student Eva Schnittger who is visiting from Germany.

First Speaker
Our First Speaker was Chris Osborne from Rotoract who gave us a short update on the recent RYPEN camp which took place 22 – 24 July at Kokako Lodge Huna.

The weekend was run by young Rotaractors and past RYLA awardees who share their experiences, hopes and ideals with participants with keynote speaker invited on Saturday evening.

RYPEN is designed for Year 11 and 12 students who are seen as the upcoming leaders in your school, not those students who are already leading and achieving amazing things or those at the bottom end, but those students who just need a bit of a push and a confidence boost to start achieving at their full potential.

RYLA EVENING INTRODUCTIONS AT ROTARY NEWMARKET

Todd Hanlon has his daughter home sick tonight so had to pull out at the last minute. Todd has been involved in the running of RYLA since the mid-90s. Todd manages the island planning, the speaker program and is the go-to person for answers to difficult questions.
James Gordon (Captain James Gordon) James is the officer in command for the outdoor phase as well as being an executive at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare. He has been the OIC for the last two years and we the organisers of RYLA really appreciate his input to the planning and leadership on the Island.
Will Creedy was on RYLA in 201_ and has been a regular team leader on RYPEN for the past two years as well as a two-year team leader on RYLA. This year he was also an engineer and did a great job on the island, at times under quite some pressure. Will is a manager with Restaurant Brands.
Mehak Janjua is a past RYLA awardee from 2015 who has also come back three times as a team leader at RYPEN as well as RYLA and has also spoken at RYLA on one occasion. Mehak was the district 9920 Chair of Rotaract in 2020 and in 2019 was invited to the RI International conference in San Diego where she was part of a Rotaract team attending the Rotary International Symposium on Youth. She also attended RYLA Oceania in Sydney in January 2020. She is always a great help in finding good candidates for RYLA. She is an engineer at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare
Haider Janjua is Mehak’s younger brother who attended RYLA in 2019 and is keen to get back into community projects
Nick Mitchell was at RYLA in 2018 and since then has volunteered as an Engineer on the Island. This year he came back as a team leader, and he is increasingly getting involved in the overall planning and leadership for RYLA as we go forward. Nick is an urban planner and a development manager at MetLife care.
Kevin Choi was at RYLA in 2018 when he was a student at Auckland University now he has a real job and is working at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare where he is a product development engineer.
Anna Rouse was on RYLA in 2021 and has come back this year as both a team leader and an engineer. Anna is also the RYLA awardee who has been managing the RYLA team doing salvation army packing on Saturdays at the MT Wellington depot. Anna is an accountant with Icebreaker in Parnell.
Murray Thom Last but by no means least. Murray has been contributing to RYLA since the early 90’s.  Murray’s own unique style is always well received at RYLA and the chance to get up and rock to the music is greatly appreciated by them all every year.
I should also note that in the feedback from RYLArians this year there was quite a bit of concern about the way in which Murray’s presentation was interrupted by Captain James Gordon. Many thinking Murray had a lot more to say and that he was rudely interrupted. I can reassure you all that the interruption went exactly to plan, and it is great credit to Murrays acting ability that you might have thought otherwise.

Members Slot

Most members of the club will be aware that I am a member of the RNZYS and as Mike Allison noted I attended the club’s recent 150th anniversary bash with the resultant consequences.

While I have an interest in one of the MRXs that are berthed outside the RNZYS Rooms my main focus these days is race management.  I am a national race officer which means I can run international, regional and club events in Auckland and elsewhere.  Through the winter I and team of 7 volunteers run two of six windward leeward race days.

In this report I had hoped to tell you of my weekends on-water activities which was intended to be a report on the windward leeward races I and my team were scheduled to run last weekend for the RNZYS.  That hope was dashed by the wind gods deciding to turn their backs on us by failing to provide any wind that we could use.  That’s sailing.
