President's Notes
From Co-President John

The secret is slowly getting out …

Once a week RCON holds its weekly meeting at One Tree Hill College at 8am.

This week we had a good turnout with a blend of both Newmarket and Penrose members to listen to two staff members from OTHC who have attended RYLA.

Jordyn was the first staff member to be sponsored to RYLA and Yi Biao the most recent. Those attending were treated to an encouraging insight into the benefit of RYLA from these two excellent representatives.

These Breakfast meetings are intimate and a lot of fun. If you haven’t experienced one you should make the effort you will not be disappointed. They are a good example of Rotary at its grass roots level with enthusiastic members having some fun and learning about Rotary projects.

Committee meetings start over the next two weeks make the effort to attend where possible as this is where the real work of Rotary takes place.

Our next meeting will be lunch at Epsom Community Centre – Jane Haines & Karen Bennett from Staples Education Foundation

John Hawke needs your help!

John has a vast knowledge of the admin needed to run our meetings which is why we gave him the role of Meeting Captain.

But he can’t (be allowed to) do this on his own!

I need “volunteers” to join his small team who will be rostered on for each meeting - to run the front desk

These volunteers will be listed in each weeks Bulletin (so you will need to read the Bulletin) if you can’t attend it’s YOUR responsibility to find a replacement.

If “volunteers” are not forthcoming we will pick members at random to fill this job.

Thank you Peter Corner for stepping up to join the team as the first volunteer.  You will be on desk duty at our next meeting on 22 July at Espom Community Centre.

INAUGURAL BREAKFAST MEETING OF NEWMARKET ROTARY

Despite the absence of overseas travellers – and inevitable apologies from those for whom the rush hour commute is an impossible burden, President John presided over a most successful session.

Speakers were Science teacher Yi Biao Ang – the fourth OTHC teacher to be selected for the wonderful RYLA leadership development opportunity and Jordyn Murray, the first teacher to win the award in 2022,

Yi Biao really appreciated the exceptional quality and relatability of speakers – noting how patterns of open, honest communication and a safe environment facilitated exceptionally speedy progress – while the new experience of social enterprise greatly widened his understanding beyond previous frameworks. Then the island experience allowed areas traversed in the talks to be put into practice, with changing of groups allowing new knowledge to be applied more widely, offering invaluable insights and pushing him to show initiative.

Both Jordyn and Yi Biao had the most vivid memories of walking on scoria at 4am – with the 42km round-island walk – but Jordyn had the added experience of ceaseless, torrential rain! Yi Biao particularly appreciated speaker Phil with his skilled message of de-escalation, while Jordyn fondly recalled Kevin Biggar, with his Planning to win and Three Bastards rule!

Positive thinking of Why not me? I am. I can. I will! have continued to be guiding messages for her, noting the most important message of all is how you act in everyday life.

Discussion was very lively and informed, with Peter Ross noting that the Army input now coming from older volunteers was actually an advantage, because of the depth of life-wisdom they are able to offer.
Meeting captain John Scott concluded events, by leading Rotarians in a rousing song.
