Stories
RYLA meets Newmarket Rotary
At our meeting on Tuesday 7 August it was a case of RYLA meets Rotary. So there will be many more photos (which speak for themselves) than words.

Peter Ross before introducing the RYLARIANs present gave us a little summary of what happened in the back ground of RYLA including a short video of the event.

Thanks were tendered to James Carmichael for the online registration system, Brian McMath and Warwick Leyland for the superb line up of speakers, Scott Burridge for the community day, Pam and Alan Deal as camp parents and then all the other people who worked in the background including 3/6 Battalion RNZIR who run the "Island" .

The RYLARIANS who spoke all talked glowingly of  their experience over the week. Lessons learnt, amongst other things that failure is ok but don't let it stop you. The absence of cell phones is not a recipe for disaster, The "Island" experience took a lot of the participants out of their comfort zones (which was not to be unexpected as it was one of the coldest weeks of the year in Auckland).

It is clear that this years group of RYLARIANs have gelled into a cohesive unit  and friendships made during the week will last for lifetimes.

Rather than more words pictures will suffice.

Trees For Survival
Trees for Survival - Day one

Some pictures and a report from David Weikart

The first of this year's 'Trees for Survival' rural plantings was successfully completed on Monday in co-operation with 20 St. Cuthbert's students.

Approximately 1000 seedlings were introduced on a steep hillside previously prone to runoff and erosion from stock use.  800 of the seedlings were sourced from St. Cuthbert's own Trees for Survival nursery with the remaining stock provided by Auckland City Council who oversees the regional program.  Some of Monday's hillside had been previously planted by another TFS club and gave an indication of the positive effect of added vegetation.

Eight RCON members made the trek to the very scenic farm property near Clevedon, and were treated to a brilliant clear and sunny day with the morning tea beforehand and the traditional sausage and cake luncheon upon completion.
Taking into account the average age difference between the two groups it was acknowledged that both teams made significant contribution to the day's success.

Many thanks and congratulations were exchanged before the girls boarded their bus for the trip back to Auckland in time for the end of the school day.  Some of the Rotary team took time before departing to inspect an adjacent area planted some years ago by our club, and reported impressive growth and much improved riparian conditions.

The second of this year's TFS plantings is scheduled for Friday 17 August in conjunction with St Peters College.

ROMAC

OPERATIONS MANAGER NEW ZEALAND
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children

ROMAC is a key District Governor Rotary programme providing life-saving and dignity-restoring treatment to the children from developing countries in Oceania.

This Rotary programme spans the Australian and New Zealand regions, and between 20 and 30 children are referred to New Zealand (mostly to Starship hospital) for treatment each year.

We are looking for an Operations Manager, who is a current member of Rotary, to join our volunteer team, mostly based in Auckland. The primary role of the Operations Manager is to organise and manage the logistics of getting ROMAC patients from the Pacific islands to New Zealand for treatment. This includes the processes associated with obtaining and managing the appropriate passport, VISA and immigration requirements and ensuring ROMAC documentation is completed.  Travel documentation, itineraries and ticketing for child and carer travel to New Zealand and return home are also part of the role.

This role is part of the NZ Regional Committee with members who are supportive and have roles integral to the Operations Manager role. Generally, a commitment of between 7 and 14 hours per week may be required to fulfil this role, occasionally longer when uploading data and information into the ROMAC database and reporting.

If you are a Rotarian looking for a way to contribute directly to the objects of Rotary and are interested to find about more about this role please email NZ Region Chair Glenys Parton at newzealand@romac.org.au for a Role Description.
