Trees for Survival - Day one

The first of this year's 'Trees for Survival' rural plantings was successfully completed on Monday in co-operation with 20 St. Cuthbert's students.
Approximately 1000 seedlings were introduced on a steep hillside previously prone to runoff and erosion from stock use. 800 of the seedlings were sourced from St. Cuthbert's own Trees for Survival nursery with the remaining stock provided by Auckland City Council who oversees the regional program. Some of Monday's hillside had been previously planted by another TFS club and gave an indication of the positive effect of added vegetation.
Eight RCON members made the trek to the very scenic farm property near Clevedon, and were treated to a brilliant clear and sunny day with the morning tea beforehand and the traditional sausage and cake luncheon upon completion.
Taking into account the average age difference between the two groups it was acknowledged that both teams made significant contribution to the day's success.
Many thanks and congratulations were exchanged before the girls boarded their bus for the trip back to Auckland in time for the end of the school day. Some of the Rotary team took time before departing to inspect an adjacent area planted some years ago by our club, and reported impressive growth and much improved riparian conditions.
The second of this year's TFS plantings is scheduled for Friday 17 August in conjunction with St Peters College.
