Editors Rant

Not really a Rant but an apology for the late delivery of this bulletin.

Hopefully you will find the content interesting.

Our Christmas Party at MacFarlane’s was just lovely.

Big thank you to Jill and Alastair for allowing us to meet together in your beautiful Home.

Also a big thank you to also to Debbie, Jill and Rosie, the professional organisers, who put together the evening with such enthusiasm and skill.

It was special to present Jon Simcock with Honorary Membership. Congratulations Jon and thank you for all you have done for our wonderful club over 47 years.

For those of you that were unable to make last evening, I will repeat some of what I said last night.

What is very clear is that when we are at a lovely event such as last evening, is just how much we all enjoy each other’s company.

We not only value the opportunity that belonging to Rotary gives us to help others, both here in NZ and overseas, but in doing so we make lifetime friends with many of our club members.

We have an amazing Club and wonderful members. What we do need to do next year, and in future years, is to build our membership so that other people, like us, can also enjoy the benefits of Rotary and build on what we have together achieved as a club over the past 78 Years. (1945)

We have some challenges ahead of us. All meeting venues have taken it upon themselves to greatly increase their meal and Venue prices. John Hawke has battled with this all year and we need to be very grateful to John for all he has done in this regard.

In the New Year we will clarify the best meeting venue options and frequency.

We have set up a meetings committee and a speakers committee’s to help us have informative, enjoyable and inspirational meetings that we trust will be well attended.

We will continue to have a monthly evening meeting with Partners which we all seem to really enjoy.

With the meal costs blowing out we now need to advise all venues in advance exactly how many will be attending and that number is what they will cater for. So please attend if you can and certainly click on “I will attend” to John Hawke’s email so we cater for you.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas, a safe and relaxing summer holiday and look forward to seeing you all again in the new year.

David Lumsden

The club has been advised of the recent death of former member (and the last Mayor of Newmarket) David Lumsden Greg Carr comments as follows:
“David always had a smile as he greeted me at Rotary. I met him in the early 80s as he was wanting an office to rent and we had space available. The renting did not happen but we had a very good conversation about the status of Newmarket’s footpaths at the Parnell end of Broadway. The Blind Institute was just up the road and the footpaths caused problems. David was Mayor of Newmarket and one of his successes was the upgrade of the northern end of Broadway. Another memory of David was that he never took a raffle himself but used Sydney’s name and she was very successful. Vale, David. “

Emphasis on our Youth Programmes - Remuera Golf Club

This packed evening meeting, organised by Peter Ross, and our first back at the Golf Club for some time, had it all. Passion and inspiration, ambition and talent. What outstanding presentations – from the young, and the young at heart.

Facilitators introduced eloquent speakers discussing their experiences of RYLA & RYLA Elevate, RYPEN and the RYPEN Disability Day, MUNA, REP, RYDA, the Chennery Scholarships, the Rotary National Science & Technology Forum, Interact, Young Totara Awards, and the Ross Craig Oncology Award. The commitment of those speaking shone through the presentations – the common theme being the changes that their various Rotary experiences had made to their lives, and how that change would influence their future careers. From Law to Zoology, from Imperial College to Yale, from alternative coffee essences to dealing with the grief-stricken - the creative opportunities being embraced by those presenting were awe-inspiring. All expressed appreciation to Rotary and Rotarians for the ongoing support from the various programmes and acknowledged the leaders who contribute so much to those programmes.

As more than one speaker emphasised, leadership and teamwork – allowing all team members to contribute - were key. Developing and making full use of networks was an important take-away from the evening.

The major contribution made by the Trusts associated with the Newmarket Club was acknowledged. The significant contribution made by Peter Ross in running the District’s youth activities was highlighted by many of the speakers and affirmed by the meeting.

Rotary World

Koroipita Village – Fiji

Your World Community Service Committee (WCS), were pleased to see their suport for the contaier going to the village of Koroipita Fiji competed last week.

The Koroipita container was organised by the Rotary Club of Rotorua Passport, and distribution managed in Fiji by Rotarian, Paul Forest, GM of Model Towns Charitable Trust.

The Koroipita village has been supported by Rotary for nearly 50 years.

The Model Town project was founded by Rotarian, Peter Drysdale in 1985. Prior to registration of the Modern Town Charitable Trust, (MTCT), the project had been operating as the Fiji Rotahomes project under the Rotary club of Lautoka.

Koroipita means Village of Peter.

Over the past 33 years, 738 homes have been built in the country areas. For the past 18 years and in parallel, the trust has been building and perfecting the fully serviced Model Town which now has 241 homes.

The total number of people housed in country areas and at the modern town is now 4330.

RCON contribution to the Rotorua Passport Container to Koroipita Fiji.

$3,000 was approved for this project by the Board at the 28^th August Board meeting.

A range of medical and hardware supplies were purchase by Roger and Georgie. Bill & Trish purchased kitchen appliances.

Through John Hawke, Fresh & Clean donated linen, first-aid kits and accessories and John donated carpet tiles, linen and other accessories.

The goods were delivered to Rotorua to the organiser, Chris Joseph, from the Rotary Club of Rotorua Passport. The container is due to leave for Fiji next Tuesday.

Sincere thanks for RCON’s contribution was sent from Paul Forest, General Manager of Model Town Charitable Trust, Koroipita Village.

Polio Campaign

John Hawke, District Polio Ambassador, led us on a Polio public awareness walk from the Domain down to the Lumsden at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago. We then raised a glass to David Lumsden who had died during the previous week and enjoyed a “World’s Greatest meal” in support of Polio.

The first meeting for next year will be held on Tuesday 16^th January.
