TREES FOR SURVIVAL

Two of our schools, St Cuthberts and St Peters, are both involved in the Trees for Survival plantings this month. With the Schools and the City Council,  the Club helps fund the plants and the costs of the days out.  For St Cuths., the planting was held at Pinnacle Hill, Bombay on Friday 12th August; for St Peters, at Parakai the planting was due to be held yesterday.

David Bradshaw, Co Chair D9920 Environment Committee comments:

On Friday St Cuthberts year 9 students planted more than 700 seedlings on a property in the Bombay hills owned by Peter Martin's family.

Alan Hayward, John Hawke, Colin Knox and I went along to help/supervise (or maybe just to sample the excellent morning tea and BBQ lunch).

The girls were quick workers and being a bluebird day the project was wrapped up in record time.  It is very rewarding to see that Rotary Newmarket's support of this Trees for Survival program (both at St Cuthberts and St Peters) is resulting in learning in the school environment where the students propagate the seed, then planting them along waterways and other environmentally at-risk sites.

Some club members will remember Peter was a member of our club some time back before he moved to Drury.  Peter told me that his club is also supporting TfS programs.
