Stories
Marie Lebreton - Rotary Exchange Student

Marie LeBreton our exchange student gave her final presentation to the club last Tuesday.
Supporting her were friends and her host families over the past year. The Meadowcrofts, Orchards, Burtons and The Burridges.

Marie gave us a run down of her time and the activities during her action-packed year in New Zealand.

Although homesick when she arrived she decided to get stuck in, get to know New Zealand and enjoy herself.

With the assistances of her host families and other members o=of the Newmarket Rotary club, she is managed to visit more places in new Zealand in one year than many manage in a life-time.   She enjoyed her time at Epsom Girls Grammar.  Althou gh coming from the French education system she found at first a bit different.  She had to wear uniform!

While having a limited command of the New Zealand version of the Engllish language was a bit difficult at the start Marie now has a command of the vernacular and is now fully conversant.

She has really enjoyed being a part of the Rotary club of Newmarket.  She met numerous exchange students and has now friends all over the world.  She organised a quiz night with rotary exchange students which raised $5,000.00 for ERKS.

We wish Marie well for her future and hope to see her back here again one day.
AG Roger Harvey's Final Update
District Governer Rodger Harvey gave the club his final for his year.

As a consequence of the District Conference making a higher than expected profit our club will be benefiting from that to the tune of some $21000.00.  Of that $21000.00,  $3,000.00 of which has been paid to one of the speakers at the conference and $3,000.00 has been paid to Foundation boosting our clubs contribution to $100.00 per head.

He thanked members for their efforts in both supporting District and also maintaining the impressive number of collegial and fundraising activities through the year.  To those concerned it has been an astonishing effort.  Well done team.

He also reported briefly on his attendance at the RI Convention in Atlanta.  The size of the event was astonishing.  44,000 attendees meaning there had to be 2 openings with 22,000 Rotarians attending each.  It beggars belief when you are used to the New Zealand scale of things.

One of the most amazing things reported on was the Polio Pluys project raised 1.2 billion dollars in donations and pledges within 15 minites thorugh significant personal donations from Bill Gates and others to national contribitions. The scale of this effort is truely massive.
New Member Mike Alison
Mike Alison was inducted as new member of the club at our meeting on Tuesday.  Welcome.

He has been a guest for the last few weeks, liked what he saw and has joined us.  Mike's father Harvey is a stalwart of Penrose Rotary

Be sure to make yourselves know to Mike and welcome him to our club.
