Stories
President Simons First meeting for 2017
President Simon welcomed members to the first meeting in 2017.

As is the case the meeting is a joint meeting with Penrose Rotary Club and President Simon welcomed members of that club including Win Miskelly, Harvey Alison, Angus Fletcher, Alex Burrell and Jim Espie.

President Simon gave us an update on the Habitat For Humanity project which is being run with Habitat for Humanity and St Cuthberts College later this year.

There will be a charity dinner at St Cuthbert’s with a 20s theme.

The project still needs sponsorship, donations and kind and items for the charity auctions.

If you can assist in this regard please contact President Simon
John and Fiona Mitchell's Excellent Argentinian Adventure
Main Speaker at our first meeting of the year was John Mitchell who gave us a run down on his (and Fiona's) visit to Argentina.

In their month in Argentina John and Fiona visited Buenos Aries, the Tigre Delta, Mendoza Cordoba, and Iguacu.

Some of the photos John took during his travels are posted with this story. They show the natural wonder that is Argentina.  The country is big and should be a player on the world stage but as it was governed by a lite version of the Venezuealan experiment it has been until recently an economic basket case.  A new government has started to change things but it will take time.

Buenos Aries is a city of 18 million with extremes of wealth and poverty, extremes of architectural styles from shacks to palaces of various ages.  There are lots of apartments, dogs and lots of litter.

Mendoza is in the foothills of the Andes and is the area in which most of the wine in Argentina is produced.  John commented that he enjoyed the food.

Cordoba is a city the size of Auckland some 500 kilometres from BA.  It is a city founded by the Jesuits and is said to be the cultural and education capital of Argentina.  Most if not all of our clubs recent exchange students came from Cordoba.  Indeed John and Fiona stayed with the family of one of those students, and in doing so were introduced to Argentinian beef and the "Asado" the ubiquitos indoor barbeque.
John commented that the Gaucho culture is alive and well in the area of Cordoba, the horse remaining an esential means of transport for the poorer people

Iguacu Falls - the photos were astonishing.  The falls which comprise 440 individual falls are on the border of Brazil and Argentina and you can move between the two countries with out much in the way of interference.

Tigre Delta.  On the River Plate upstream from BA this is a series of flat islands linked by rivers and various waterways.  Most of not all of the inhabitants use boats, water taxis and water buses to get around the delta.  Bars have marinas and wharves instead of car parks for their customers.  As the Tigre Delta is a wealthy area there are 6 rowing clubs occupying buildings that are quite splendid, a far cry from the iron sheds that comprise most NZ racing club buildings.

Johns tales of his travels were fascinating and have definitely put Argentina on the destination list for your editor.
Thank you John

Chenery Memorial Scholarship
Past President Peter Ross, Chair of the Chenery Memorial Trust presented the annual Chenery Scholarship to Renee Zhang.

The scholarship is awarded to Epsom Girls Grammar students undertaking courses of study at Auckland University.  The scholarship comprises 3 annual payments of $2500.00 to the recipient.

After the presentation of the scholarship Renee gave us an insight into her background.

She was a prefect in her final year at Epsom Girls, She had a wide range of interests at school undertaking and participating in aerobics competitions mentoring other students. In other words she seemed to be a good all round student that is a credit to her school.

At Auckland University René will be undertaking a course of study focused upon a joint law arts degree.
