Principal speaker on Tuesday

was Kane Chong, a 16 year old student at ACG College who featured in last weekend’s “Sunday” programme on TV One where his song “We are One” was launched.

Kane wrote the song in the hope of changing the way people think about autism, inspired by his friend, Connor, who is affected by the disorder. Assisted by ROCON, Kane was introduced to the Play it Strange Foundation where Mike Chunn took it onboard and enlisted Jordan Luck to provide the vocals in the full production which was recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead studio in Auckland.

The song, which had Mike Chunn hooked from the first listen, gives the message that it is OK to talk about autism openly, with the chorus, "We are the voices of the voiceless, for the ones standing in the shadows".

Kane commented “"People tend to shy away from the topic of autism but this song was about opening up discussions abo

ut it. Money was never my intention - I wanted people to understand autism. We tend to judge a person by how weirdly they do things but we never see the truth behind it, why a person acts a certain way."

All proceeds from sales will benefit Autism New Zealand and can be uploaded from iTunes.

Kane was introduced by Martin McGahan and thanked by Michelle Miller with special mention being made of the support provided to Kane by Paul Monk in getting the project off the ground.

Marie Lebreton

President Simon welcomed members and guests and invited our most recent Rotary Youth exchange student Marie Lebreton to introduce herself to members.

Marie Lebreton hails from the township of Nesmy in the Pays de la Loire region in western France, approximately 70 km north of La Rochelle.

Sponsored by the nearby Rotary Club of La Roche-sur-Yon, Marie has two younger sisters, and is a keen winter sports enthusiast particularly ice skating. Marie expressed a keen interest in the outdoors and sailing in particular, both of which she is sure to be exposed to during her time with us.

Fortunately Marie’s English is better than President Simon’s French and Marie confidently shared details of her home town and family.President Simon welcomed members and guests and invited our most recent Rotary Youth exchange student to introduce herself to members.

Local government elections take place in October. Auckland Council has two complementary decision-making parts - the governing body and local boards. Although autonomous, they make decisions as Auckland Council within their respective areas of responsibility.

The governing body consists of the mayor and 20 councillors from the wards they represent. Their role focusses on the big picture scenario and region-wide strategic decisions. The 21 local boards represent their local communities and make decisions on local issues, activities and facilities, providing local leadership and building stronger local communities.
The Waitematā Local Board (WLB) includes Auckland CBD Newmarket, Parnell, Grafton Westmere, Grey Lynn and Ponsonby.

As the quality of our Local Board and Auckland Council is integral to the development and enhancement of our communities, it is really important that you place yourself in a position to exercise an educated vote.
