President's Message
Simon Dalton

From President Simon.

Some good speakers have been arranged for the next few weeks. Support your club by attending the meetings and hearing what they have to say.

Our evening meeting next week at  Remuera features Mike Williams speaking on behalf of the Howard League.  It should be interesting and thought provoking.

President Simon reported that $25,000 was raised at the Gadsby fundraiser. All who attended enjoyed themselves. Simon also reported that during the cash appeal in Newmarket the St Cuthbert’s girls met Max Key who is interested in the Habitat for Humanity build and may put his nose in when construction starts.

Helping Hands Build. Volunteers are needed for the construction of the dwelling on Broadway. If you wish to volunteer can you contact Conrad Lapointe at Habitat for Humanity. Habitat presently have spaces available on May 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. If you do contact Conrad he will take you through the registration process.

A brave band of Rotarians ventured out into the rain Tuesday 4 April to attend the production of As You Like It at the Pop-up Globe. While the conditions were dreadful the production was superb and very enjoyable.

The following are details of speakers and duties for the next two weeks. If you cannot undertake your rostered duties please arrange for someone to take your place.

Please note the club will not be meeting the Tuesday after Easter and will not be meeting on Anzac day.

Stories
Maria Madill - Kiwiharvest
Maria Madill - Kiwi Harvest.

Our keynote speaker on 4 April was Maria Madill manager of Kiwiharvest a perishable food rescue NGO.

Maria, a former Rotary exchange student (and very happy to find the jacket still fits!), runs Kiwiharvests Auckland operations. The aim is to stop food going to waste by rescuing surplus food from commercial bakeries supermarkets and other vendors and delivering it to Auckland’s charities to feed those in need.

Kiwiharvest aims to reduce the negative impacts of food waste on our communities and our environment by redistributing that surplus and helping to create positive social change. Maria pointed out that 1.3 million tons of food are wasted every year in New Zealand. In New Zealand 40% of food is wasted before it gets to market. We only see perfect tomatoes, perfect bananas and perfect apples. We do not see those which are marked slightly soiled or do not meet the marketing requirements of the vendors.

New Zealand produces enough food to feed 20 million people yet tons are thrown away. Kiwiharvest rescues this provides it to social agencies enabling those agencies to assist those in need rather than focusing on feeding those in need.

Kiwiharvest collects a lot of food. About 300 tonnes or 870,000 meals. 71% of what is collected is fresh produce, 6% meat and dairy 8% bread and 12% groceries. The totals are growing daily as more and more entities engage with Kiwiharvest.

One of the interesting outcomes of Kiwiharvest is that it introduces people to foods they otherwise did not know existed. Maria told the story of delivering fresh leaks to a social enterprise in South Auckland were a fellow asked what leaks were when he was unloading them from the van.

Kiwiharvest is supported by Goodman group who have enabled them to set up shop in Ellerslie. Other supporters of provided 2 refrigerated trucks which enable pallet loads of food to be picked up and moved to storage and thence to the social agencies are food is being distributed to. The food that Kiwiharvest received is donated. The distribution services done for free stop the entities that Kiwiharvest donates to the entities Kiwiharvest staff know. They are checked to see that food is properly handled managed and used.

One of the downsides of Kiwiharvest's activities is that suppliers of surplus products realise that they are producing surplus food and start to manage their internal supply chains so as to minimise the production of surplus food that could potentially go to waste will be rescued by Kiwiharvest.

Maria’s address was well received by members who could see the impact of what Kiwiharvest is doing in Auckland and throughout New Zealand.

ONJA - Update
Some weeks ago we had Sam Lucas talk to us about Onja, which is the education, social enterprise project Sam set up in Madagascar.

This is an update we received tracking Onja's progress.

Sam intends to send one out every few months, detailing progress and key challenges. This is the first.

Key Progress:
  • I presented at 5 rotary clubs in New Zealand over the past couple of months, and am now a member of the st Johns club!
  • We are now working towards an international rotary grant through the st Johns club. Rotary New Market have quite extensive experience in creating international grants and have indicated their willingness to help out where needed.
  • I spoke about Onja at my local church too, and a professional videographer who heard me speak offered to help. He made a this short video to supplement the crowdfunding video: https://vimeo.com/209855616
  • We've almost completed a 25 page proposal that we can serve as a base for the international grant proposal, and for information for donors.
  • I had a little bit of time off in New Zealand, and managed to go surfing once a week or so!
Key Challenges:
  • I've just landed in San Francisco, the idea being to continue fundraising here. I'm hoping to speak at rotary clubs and also talk with companies, and individual donors. I have very little in the way of connections to kick this process off. Simon Jones is working on a connection through rotary, but if anyone else has any personal connections to rotarians, or other people around San Francisco who might just be a lead to something then please let me know!
Many thanks to you all,

Sam
We Are One Concert for Autism

WE ARE ONE – A Concert For Autism 2017

Presented by Play It Strange with Rotary Newmarket

Larry Morris, Fiona McDonald, Shane Cortese, Mike Chunn, Peter Urlich, Jordan Luck and many more will be taking the stage, to celebrate difference and recognize talent and courage.

Following on from the success of the We Are One project in 2016, this concert aims to shine the spotlight on Autism in a very positive manner, create awareness and provide opportunities for young students who are on the autistic spectrum to get on stage and celebrate with professional musicians.

Play It Strange Trust CEO, Mike Chunn, sees this concert as empowering those who are challenged in this world. For example,  A young boy of five with autism is bullied and rejected by his peers. That lasts for two years - then he retreats to his home where he is schooled year after year with a parent steering and teaching him with love and sincerity. That boy will be onstage at the Concert For Autism where he will be conducting an orchestra, playing violin and standing tall in those triumphant moments.”

The concert aims to raise funds for Autism NZ’s Employment Programme that assists people with autism to find suitable, paid employment in mainstream settings.

With songs like -  I Feel Good, Why Does Love Do This To Me, Let’s Think Of Something, Stuff And Nonsense, Blackbird, Rust In My CarExpect to be inspired and want to party!

Rotary In Samoa
A week or so ago we welcomed Walter van der Kley and Ray Decker from the Ashburton Rotary Club. Walter spoke about their club’s and his initiative over several years to install book shelves, desks, chairs, books and laptops in schools in Samoa. Their involvement began in the wake of the tsunami September 2009 and has grown in scope over the years.

They have started a partnership with Don Bosco School and Vocational Centre where scholarships in trades are now reaping benefits as the students have life changing trade and business skills. Walter and Ray urge Rotarians to join them on their next visit in August.

Update - If you wish to visit Samoa as part of a Rotary Group or on your own then further to last week’s comment on assistance for Samoa, Riccarton Rotarian Ray Deaker and Ashburton’s Walter van der Kley will be leading a visit to Samoa in the second half of August. They are keen to have Rotarians and partners accompany them – one or two weeks, with visits to primary schools to assist with literacy etc.
