Rotary Newmarket along with the Ākina foundation $10,000 Kickstarter event ran for the second year on Tuesday 5 September 2017. Along the lines of Dragons Den 7 finalists presented to members and guests. We noted that; • Social enterprise is based on sustainable business practice. • The capital injection will expand their business and funds came from the Rotary charitable foundation. • Paul Dunphy from Ākina the social enterprise incubator was at the event to help run the session with Brian McMath. Thanks to Brian for another successful year. • 15 applications narrowed down to the 7 finalists below • 1. Foster our future - tuition for lower decile communities through evidence based and innovative mentoring. 2. Make give live: improving health and wellbeing through group production of NZ wool beanies. 3. Eat my lunch: through the “buy one give one” model, Eat My Lunch aims to ensure no child at school goes hungry. 4. Organic edible garden: teaching youth, parents, grandparents and communities how to grow their own food organically. 5. Cottonseed: Producing sustainable garments using natural fabrics and helping immigrant women settle into NZ. 6. Nanogirl Labs Kitchen Science cookbook: Every recipe is a science experiment that can be done at home. For every book sold - one is donated to a needy community. 7. Duffle and co: Apparel company producing quality products benefitting local manufacturing and Asia’s environment. After hearing from the finalists the members voted on the winner of the award. After votes where counted the Winner of the $10,000 Kickstarter for 2017 was Cottonseed. Well done ladies.
