We need volunteers for our biggest fund raising event of the year - Circus Quirkus - which is being held on Sunday 2 June at the Due Drop Events Centre, 770 Great South Road, Manukau. There are two performances at 1pm and 4pm, so it will start late morning and run until early evening. The tasks are not onerous - cooking on the barbecue, attending upon the refreshments stall and general meeting, greeting and assisting the children and their parents.
It has been an extremely successful event for the Club over the years, with many grateful children, great fun and the chance for camaraderie with your fellow Rotarians. Please contact Asel Opata at 021-091-90655 or aokopata@gmail.com or Mark Wells at 021-240-9200 or jmt.wells@gmail.com to volunteer.

Planting with St Peters College and St Cuthberts College. As in the past we look forward to sharing the day with the Rotary Club of Newmarket. It is a great opportunity to see first-hand the work the students have done growing the trees and the many learning opportunities that your Club’s support of the programme has made available to them. Sue Crawshay will be facilitating the St Peter’s planting on June 5th at Skydive Auckland and I will be present at the St Cuthbert’s planting August 9th at the Main Property planting in Bombay. Greg Moyle will be speaking to us about Le Quesnoy story WW1
The story of Le Quesnoy has become one of the most famous in New Zealand military history and the strong relationship between Le Quesnoy and New Zealand continues to this day.
In WW1, the New Zealand division served gallantly on the western front. It saw action on the Somme, Messines, Broodseinde Ridge, and Passchendaele. In 1918 the division was at the forefront of the British 3rd army during the 100 days offensive. Following actions at Baupame, Cambrai and ultimately Le Quesnoy.
The problem with Le Quesnoy was that it was a fortress with significant ramparts, bastions and other defensive works.
This is the story of how the New Zealand Division managed to capture the city in the last days of WW1, and the locals' enduring affection for NZ and NZers, and how Greg has been paramount in creating NZ's only WW1 museum in Europe.
This is a great story and Greg tells it well.
Penny and Warwick Leyland visited LeQuesnoy in 2019 and were enthralled by its fortress, its history and NZ street names (even Helen Clark Road!),

This will be an amazing presentation by Boyne Boyne will be speaking about the Walsh Memorial Flying School. It has been operating for 57 years, each January the event happens at Waharoa Airfield near Matamata. The event is organized by Scouts New Zealand. Rotary Newmarket and the trusts associated with Rotary Newmarket have helped to sponsor the event for about 15 years. Each year 40 – 45 young boys and girls, usually year 13, learn to fly during the 2 weeks camp. It is a life changing and career defining experience for the students, about 40% of the graduates go forward into a career in aviation. Newmarket Rotary plays a significant role in sponsoring students to the school and making an award to the best Rotary student, the Bruce Donnelly Memorial Award. Boyne has been involved with the Walsh for over 10 years, taking over from PDG Ross Craig.

Henry is the next generation of young aspiring builders servicing the wider Auckland Region. He finished his education at Kings College in 2014 – thoroughly enjoying his time, at Kings the careers department encouraged surgeons and lawyers – being a builder was somewhat secondary. Henry completed his building apprenticeship with BCITO in about 3 years, then started Concept Carpenters in 2017, arguably what he was distended for after mowing lawns for people’s money while at primary school. Fast-forward to today, Henry has established Concept Carpenters to a team of 14, specialising in quality residential projects. Henry recently connected with Charlotte and Paul at One Tree Hill College to assist with their gateway programme, he has chatted to the graduates of 2022 and 2023 - hopefully inspiring their future endeavours. Henry and his team have also more recently been assisting with transforming the ex-state house. |
