Our first meeting of 2024 is the annual joint meeting with the Penrose Rotary Club. The Speaker will be Brian McMath whose subject will be "A Tree is More Than Wood" As we move to a world where fuels, chemicals plastics, garments, and even drugs that are currently derived from petrochemicals are replaced with new alternatives derived from renewable organics, our trees, our forests, represent a key strategic resource.
New Zealand is increasingly being recognised as one of the technology thought leaders, not only in forest science, but also in the development of new, unique, bio-materials
.
The report's finding is that the total commercial opportunity for New Zealand is likely to be in the range of $18 to $25 billion.
This represents a completely new industry segment that has the potential to be larger than those of most of the country’s primary product categories if not greater than all of them combined.

Jono Ridler, 33, starts his swim at 10am on Tuesday from Aotea Great Barrier Island and swim to Narrow Neck Beach in Devonport. Ridler will follow rules set out by the Marathon Swimmers Federation for the solo-unassisted open-water swim record. These state that over his almost two-day journey he won’t be able to make physical contact with any support vessel or person. The current New Zealand record is 80.8km, which was a double-crossing of Lake Taupō. |

Next Tuesday at our luncheon meeting we are fortunate to have Bruce O'Leary from Milford Asset Management speaking to us.
Bruce is a senior Financial Advisor at Milford and is also on Milford's investment team, so is well versed in the current global markets and their prospects for this year and beyond.
Bruce and Milford have done a sterling job for Dove Hospice's and the Chenery and Lois Dalley Trusts' investment funds, so we can look forward to some pertinent advice.
This is a must attend meeting for members and friends of Rotary Newmarket to receive some free advice from an expert.
Book your place by replying to John Hawke's invitation yesterday or reply to another invitation which will come to you shortly.
I look forward to seeing you there.

6.15pm for 6.30 start Please register or decline before Friday 9am. Thanks We have 2 great speakers: Karen Melville and Peter Wilson Karen Melville is the Stakeholder and Communications Manager for Ghella Abergeldie JV (GAJV) the contractor constructing the Central Interceptor. Her team looks after the various stakeholders impacted by the project. She’s been with the JV for more than four years and previously worked for Aurora Energy, an electricity distribution company in Dunedin. She has a background in Public Relations and Journalism but is now focused on Stakeholder Engagement and participation, a fairly new sub-set of the communications industry where the focus is on the community and all parties involved in a project.
Peter Wilson is Stakeholder and Communications Lead for Watercare, dedicated to the CI project for the past four-and-a-half years. He sets the stakeholder strategy, promotes the benefits of the project via a range of communications media and manages relationships with local politicians. Prior to this role, he worked at Auckland Transport in communications and stakeholder engagement. A range of roles in law, sales & marketing and tourism has given him a broad skill-set to bring to his diverse and challenging role at Watercare. |

Garden Designfest is one of our big fundraisers, and this year we are teaming up with Auckland Garden Design Society and Dove Hospice & Wellness to make it an even better garden festival.
Dove Hospice and Wellness does a fantastic job in palliative care in the eastern suburbs, and brings to the festival marketing and sponsorship skills, access to many volunteers, and nine retail shops to help increase awareness of and ticket sales for the Designfest.
Next week at our Rotary lunch, we have two of the Dove teamleaders tell us about their operation. This will be a special and informative presentation, and will expand our knowledge of our charity partner.
Please respond to John Hawke's invitation email yesterday by 8am tomorrow to let him know that you're coming to the luncheon meeting at Epsom Community Centre, 202 Gilles Ave at 12:15pm. Alternatively, email John at hawkeyecleaning@gmail.com.
This will also be a great presentation for members' partners and friends of Rotary Newmarket to attend as many are volunteers for Garden Designfest.

One Tree Hill College Trade Academy The Trade Academy caters for up to 25 selected students in Year 13 who are committed to making a trade their chosen career path. As part of the Trade Academy, a Work Placement programme is in place which gives the students the opportunity each Wednesday for 10 weeks from (circa) mid May to mid August to complete on-site experience and complete appropriate working tasks. For these Work Placement days the students are not expecting to be paid. At the conclusion of the placement, while there is no promise, the ideal situation would be an offer of full time employment with an apprenticeship.
Chrissi Bollard who coordinates the Academy has agreed to speak to RCON 7th May at one of our lunch meetings. It is hoped that members may be able to assist in introducing Chrissi to prospective companies that may be keen to participate. |
