DESCRIPTION:Greg Moyle will be speaking to us about Le Quesnoy story WW1
The story of Le Quesnoy has become one of the most famous in New Zealan
d military history and the strong relationship between Le Quesnoy and New
Zealand continues to this day.     In WW1\, the New Zealand division ser
ved gallantly on the western front. It saw action on the Somme\, Messines\
, Broodseinde Ridge\, and Passchendaele. In 1918 the division was at the f
orefront of the British 3rd army during the 100 days offensive. Following
actions at Baupame\,  Cambrai and ultimately Le Quesnoy.   The problem w
ith Le Quesnoy was that it was a fortress with significant ramparts\, bast
ions and other defensive works.    This is the story of how the New Zeal
and Division managed to capture the city in the last days of WW1\, and th
e locals' enduring affection for NZ and NZers\, and how Greg has been par
amount in creating NZ's only WW1 museum in Europe. This is a great story
and Greg tells it well.   Penny and Warwick Leyland visited LeQuesnoy in
2019 and were enthralled by its fortress\, its history and NZ street name
 s (even Helen Clark Road!)\,
