Stories
Volker Kuntzsch - CEO Sealord
The CEO Sanford, Volker Kuntzsch, spoke to us today.  He has worked all around the world and started by giving two highlights of his international work.  He worked in Namibia and turned around a fishing company.

The company was doing very poorly and required a large turn around. This came about when an employee with AIDS came to him to resign.  He let her go public with the information, helped her obtain medical attention and once she had recovered, he placed her in a counselling role.  His genuine interest in people helped the team believe in him.  This led to a massive increase in both productivity and profitability.

In the US, his engineered a turnaround of another company because he had a voice like Arnold Schwarznegger (which was enough).
When he joined Sanfords, the company was OK which was a big difference from previous roles.   He decided that they should not compete on being a commodity producer as the volume out of NZ is too small.

Sanford’s vision is now to be the best seafood company in the world by having the finest source, uncompromising care and providing beautiful seafood. Volker believe the future of the company will be in niche markets and making better use of byproduct.  Moreover, there is much innovation to be done in this space.  In the future, he is aiming to form a coherent approach to our ocean policy at the national level.

Helping Hands Update
The Helping Hands Build is going very well thanks to volunteer input from a number of our club members, St Johns, St Cuthbert’s College and other project sponsors.

The roof is on, windows in and all the weatherboard in place.  See the photos of the house and the recipient family.

More volunteers may be needed next week to work on the interior.  Please email Conrad@habitat.org.nz and warren@habitat.org.nz with the days you are available

Samoa - Revisited (or an opportunity to visit Samoa)

Further to the Club’s $5k grant in support of the apprenticeship scholarships scheme Walter van der Kley [Ashburton] and Ray Deaker [Riccarton] are undertaking with the Apia Rotary Club for Don Bosco College in Samoa, Walter & Ray are booking a working/inspection trip to Samoa for the last two weeks of August.

They will be flying out from Auckland on Friday 18th August at 3.20pm. They have 9 folk in the party already, and extend a warm welcome to any RCON members and partners to join them for up to one or two weeks, as preferred - return flights can be booked to suit. The party will be staying at Le Manumea on Cross Island Road, Apia.

A great opportunity to see how our money is being spent on this very worthwhile inter-club initiative, and to participate in the project.  All enquiries to Ray in Christchurch  rayandanne@xtra.co.nz
