Committee Reports

Our guest speaker was unable to attend. her partner took her to Vanuatu for a surprise break.

The meeting turned into a club meeting where we received updates on various elements of the club activities from Peter Ross, Martin McGahan, Boyne Drummond and Ron Seeto.

Peter Ross
Peter gave us an update planning for RYLA.

Our club is responsible for the event next year. Peter has been running organisational meetings to set in place planning for administration of the event support and activities both in Auckland and on Motutapu Island.

Peter commented that the army representative was rather surprised that organisation has started so early.

Akina
Our next evening meeting is at Remuera golf club on 5 September. Applications for the Akina award will be assessed at that meeting in the award made. There are limited numbers available for the meeting so book early.

Martin McGahan
Martin as chair of the community and environment committee. Martin gave us a rundown on the committee’s activities for the forthcoming year. These include:
  1. Newmarket School, we will be helping with the “maker space”program the school is running. We have received from the school a shopping list of $20,000 for equipment. The hope is to fund 10% of the shopping list and are seeking support from trusts associated with the club for further contributions.
  2. Epsom Lodge. The club has a close association with Epsom Lodge. Eric is driving a program to install a new commercial oven in the lodge. Newmarket will be assisting with that. Eric is also setting up a program called walk in my shoes which will rehome used sports gear clothing and shoes through Epsom Lodge.
  3. Christmas hamper packing. This will take place on 14 December. Book that date in your diaries.
  4. Pregnancy Help Auckland. The club will be helping this enterprise, following an approach from PHA,  with funding to assist with the purchase of baby bassinets. These will be lent to mothers who will return them once they have no need for them.
  5. East Auckland Riding for the disabled. This entity is moving from its present premises in Meadowbank because of treaty settlements. They are moving to tge St John’s pony club site. The board has agreed to assist with funding of $2500 together with contributions from other clubs to assist with fitout of club premises.
  1. Ronald McDonald house. This is an ongoing program. The club has supported Ronald McDonald house over the years with individual projects and ongoing support including the heat and eat meals that Jane Weikart and her team prepare.
  2. AEDs. Through the June Gray trust the club has received funding to place five AEDs into the community. One has been placed and we are looking for other public spaces that are accessable on a 24/7 basis.
  3. Motutapu outdoor education Centre. This is an ongoing program. As a result of Cyclone Debbie the camp suffered significant damage but is expected to reopen later in the year. A lot of the damage has been covered by insurance but there is still make good work to be undertaken later in the year. There will be a work party on 14 October to replace walking decks around the buildings.

  4. The Rotary Centennial track on the island took a significant hit in the Cyclone. There is damage everywhere. This needs significant work to be remediate it. We are looking to support the rebuild of the track.

  5. Bob Stewart Environmental Award. This this is an annual award recognising environmental work undertaken in the community by various professionals. Nominations for this years award will be opening soon.

  6. Trees For Survival  This is a project supported by the club planting in various areas of Auckland with assistance from St Cuthbert’s and Dilworth schools.

  7. Newmarket police. The club will be seeking to re-establish contact with Newmarket police as it has been successful in the past.
Boyne Drummond

Boyne is chair of the world community services committee. He gave us an outline of the five projects the committee will be working on. These are;
  1. Taveuni eye project in association with the Rotary club on that island stop
  2. ERKS (emergency response kits) for use in the islands following disasters.
  3. Don Bosco College. The club will be providing support for this college which is in Samoa.
  4. ENT in Samoa assisting the Rose charities.
  5. Kailakani health Centre in Bangladesh. Construction of a new administration building.
Ron Seeto
Ron gave us an update on Rotary foundation and the principles upon which it is based. These are;
  1. building peace
  2. fighting disease
  3. supporting education
  4. growing local economies
  5. providing clean water.
One of the major focuses is ending polio. A program which has been at the heart of many of our club activities over the years.
Ron also commented on the Paul Harris society which funds the foundation through annual memberships of USD $1000

Most clubs could do with more members and can find it difficult to make real progress.  This seminar may prove the breakthrough the club is looking for so sending a member or two along may be a great investment in the future of our club.
