Stories
Kendall Collins - Sisters Unlimited
Our Speaker on17 October was Kendal Collins from Sisters United.

Kendal was assisted in her presentation by Saumalu Kali, program facilitator at Sisters United.

Kendal is and has been a social worker within schools and the community. Saumalu has worked in the health and youth work space for some 20 years.

Sisters United is a family based organisation providing exciting, fresh and creative services to young women in Auckland between the ages of 12 -18.

The sisters in the name of the organisation are the Goebel sisters, Parris (a well known dance choreographer), Kendall and Narelle.  They have experience in social work, creative arts and design which are applied to helping young women who have to face bullying, low self esteem, body image and such like.

The aim of the Sisters United programs is to engage with these young women using culturaly responsive programs with creative delivery with the intention of giving the young women confidence to face and address the issues mentioned above.

Sisters United offers 8 workshops that aim to help young women build a foundation of understanding about who they are by discovering their identity, build self-worth and esteem.
The workshops involve dance, the spoken word, art, music photography fashion and dream boards. These workshops are delivered to community groups, schools and individually.
Sisters United is running programs in 6 schools at the moment and there are a further 3 waiting to join in.

Because of the nature of their activities it is very difficult to measure success and KPI’s are very difficult to identify.  The way the programs are evaluated now is through post event evaluations to see how the particpants felt

Sisters United has very limited funding so they run ongoing fundraisers to undertake their programs and keep operating.  This means hard work both presenting the programs being run and finding funding to keep things going.

For more about Sisters United see their website www.sistersunited.co.nz
Fundraiser - End Polio

From President Michelle

Rotary in Australia and NZ have the opportunity to fundraise for Foundation’s End Polio now campaign. The  release of the movie “Murder on the Orient express “  is  the basis of the fund raising event. This is being released in Cinemas across Australia and NZ on Thursday 9 November.

The proposal is for clubs to sell tickets for $25 with the net proceeds to Foundation Polio Plus campaign. Any money contributed to Polio Plus will be matched 2 for 1  by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The theatre for the movie is the Rialto in Newmarket.   The movie will start at 6.30pm.   There will be a short film clip before the start of the movie “Murder On The Orient Express” explaining what Rotary is doing for Polio.  This movie opportunity is open to members, families and friends.  It is a great chance to raise public awareness as to what Rotary has done and is doing to “End Polio”.

We are working in clusters for this event.  Our cluster incorporates Newmarket, Parnell, Remuera , St.Johns and Waiheke Clubs.

Please RSVP to me with how many tickets you would like. These will be charged to your Club account and I will liaise with the organisers re the ticket sales.

Please note: this date does clash with our Seafood Cooking School event. However, for those not coming along to the Cooking School, this would be a good alternative night out!

Riding for the Disabled - New Beginnings

You will all recall the recent presentation by Sarah Heydon on Riding for the Disabled.

We have received the attached release updating us on what has recently happened with RDA in Auckland.

"We have an announcement to make!
New Name, New Location,
New Beginnings!

Our move to Meadowbank Pony Club has been a resounding success with our first day last Thursday going off without a hitch. As expected, the environment was wonderful and the horses were impeccable. And this translated to our Volunteers and Riders all having a magical and very rewarding day of riding.

Over the winter, our move got us thinking about adopting a new name. We wanted something that would not only recognise the start of a new chapter in our history, but also something to acknowledge that our Riders and Volunteers can (and do!) come from a much wider catchment area than ever before.

So we're proud and excited to announce that we will now be known as...

Auckland Central RDA!

The change from “Auckland Eastern Suburbs RDA” to “Auckland Central RDA" might not seem that big, but for us it signals a fresh start full of new opportunities and the beginning of many years to come in our new home at Meadowbank Pony Club.

Many thanks to everyone who helped us get here. We're pretty excited and we hope you are too!

Thank You
From Eric Turner at Epsom Lodge

I would like to send out a special thank you to those who have been able to support the Community and environment Committee and The Salvation Army Epsom Lodge with donations of new or used clothing and foot ware. A special mention needs to be made of the efforts of John Long (and his son Edward Long) who provided a dozen pairs of brand new converse shoes and to Glen Marvin and his sporty friends for their contribution to the project.

It is still early days and we are very keen to receive donations of good quality clothing and foot ware for those in the community we serve who have very little and find the unavailability of clothing a barrier to pursuing holistic health.

Please feel free to bring donations to Rotary day meetings or phone Eric Turner on 027 5042663 to arrange a time to drop them off to Epsom Lodge.

AUCKLAND SEAFOOD SCHOOL FELLOWSHIP EVENING

Hello All,
The Fellowship Committee of the Rotary Club of Newmarket have for the third time booked out the Auckland Seafood School for a fun evening where following a glass of bubbles we watch a demonstration of the fish dishes and compliments that will be cooked that evening.

After the demonstration which takes about half an hour, we all go through to the school and spend the next hour preparing the same meal in groups of four.

The two chefs are there to assist where necessary and unless you are a Master Chef already, you will be amazed at the wonderful dish you have produced.

Once we are all finished we take our beautifully prepared meal and all sit at a large long table where we spend the next hour eating our delicious meal complemented by the bottle of wine we brought with us. Yes it’s BYO.
