Stories
Richard Enright
Brian McMath introduced Richard Enright MAPPAS awardee for 2017. In doing so he gave us an idea of the MAPPAS scheme.  The scheme is run by the Newmarket Rotary Charitable Foundation in recognition of the work that our member Harold Titter did in the health field over many years.

The purpose of the scheme is to enable Maori and Pacific Island students to gain confidence to enter the medical profession. When Harold was Administrator of the Auckland Health Board, he noted the low numbers of Maori and Pacific students entering Med School and attempted to do something to address the matter.

This scheme was his brain child.

Richard Enright is a former MAGS student. He thanked the Club for the award. He is presently studying a Certificate of Health Science as part of the MAPPAS scheme.

The reason he is pursuing a medical career is to avoid studying Law as his parents are Lawyers.

Richard has a passion for Social Justice and his Maori heritage. He did comment that his parents were not so enthusiastic about their Maori Ancestry but he is working to change that, one suspect. As his passion for his heritage developed, he has had his eyes opened to areas of inequity and is focusing on how he can contribute to his people and improve their circumstances.
Another reason Richard is interested in medicine is that his older brother is in his 5th year at University, which means he has a mentor to speak to when he has issues. He is finding his current years study very hard as pre-med is a form of social death. Because of his brother’s presence, it is heartening to have a role model for support. Richard’s aim is to reduce and/or ameliorate inequity in health.

The Scholarship also takes a financial edge off things so he can concentrate on his studies without worrying about the costs. The Club members were very impressed by Richard. It is clear that he will go far in his chosen career and will be in time a leader of  his people.

Mike Alison's Vocational
Mike Alison gave us his vocational.

He was the oldest of four children. His father is Harvey Alison, a member of Penrose Rotary.
Mike opened by commenting that by today’s standards, he and his siblings would have been abused children although despite that he and his siblings had turned out ok. One suspects discipline was important in the Ellison household.

Mike attended St. Kentigerns junior school and then Kings College as a boarder. He did try and negotiate with his father to become a day boy at Kings College in his last year as he wanted to participate in regular sailing regattas something he could not do as a boarder. Mike’s comments about his father’s response suggested the suggestion fell flat on its face.

When he left Kings, Mike studied Accounting at Auckland University of Technology. He gave that up in 1979 and did his first blue water delivery as part of the Southern Cross yachting  team.  He did the 1979 Sydney-Hobart in light conditions. After that event, he flew home. He was lucky that he did that as he missed out on a cyclone that came through immediately after the Sydney-Hobart which knocked the returning fleet about. The same cyclone resulted in the loss of the well known yachtsman Paul Whiting who was returning to New Zealand in his vessel, Smackwater Jack.
Mike sailed on Buccaneer, a well-known racing yacht in the 80’s with Tom Clark of Ceramco fame.

In 1981, he left New Zealand on an 18 month OE which turned into a 15 year expedition. Mike sailed in the US, Antigua, the Mediterranean, England, and in the United States, over that period on generally larger yachts, becoming a well-known and sought after sailor. Mike spent three months in South Africa at about the time Rhodesia was becoming Zimbabwe. It was a most interesting time.

Mike in the time he was away sailed most of the major blue water yacht races in the Norther Hemisphere including such classics as the Fastnet race.
Mike worked for a period in New Jersey with his then wife, Betsy Ellison (a very well-known American Sailor herself), selling kitchens as US authorities would not accept NZ qualifications.

The most expensive kitchen he sold was to a wife of an American Lawyer valued at approximately $150,000.00 with every toy imaginable.

Mike returned to New Zealand after 15 years after many sea miles. He had been involved in the fitness business, although hit hard with the GFC and now has a surfacing company using nanotechnology to make surfaces and wet areas of houses water resistant.

Mike when he is not working is an international sailing judge and a national umpire. This means your editor sees him from time to time in NZ regattas. Mike’s other interests are wine, particularly Australian and New Zealand reds. His aim is to leave the world a better place and hopes to do that through his involvement in Rotary.

Thank you Mike for an interesting vocational which enables members to better get to know you.
